The University of Benin (UNIBEN) was founded in 1970 as the Institute of Technology. In 1971, it was upgraded to a full-fledged university and was taken over by the then Mid-Western State Government. Later, in 1975, the Federal Government of Nigeria assumed ownership, making it a federal university.
