History of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria
Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, was established in 1962 under the name University of Northern Nigeria. The institution was later renamed in honour of Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto and the first Premier of Northern Nigeria, to acknowledge his enduring contributions to education, leadership, and regional development. In its early years, the university operated across campuses in Zaria, Samaru, and Kano. Today, its academic activities are concentrated mainly within the Samaru and Kongo Campuses in Zaria. Since its establishment, ABU has experienced steady growth in infrastructure, academic offerings, and prestige, earning recognition as one of Nigeria’s leading federal universities.

Admission Requirements
Admission into Ahmadu Bello University is competitive and follows guidelines set by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
For undergraduate admission, candidates must
Choose ABU as their first choice in JAMB
Score at least the minimum JAMB cut-off mark (which may vary by course)
Have a minimum of five O’Level credits, including English Language and Mathematics, obtained in not more than two sittings
Participate in ABU’s Post-UTME or screening exercise
Meet departmental requirements for their chosen course
For direct entry, candidates must possess:
At least two A-level passes, ND, NCE, or equivalent qualifications in relevant subjects
